Rumours about viruses

There have been rumours in some newsgroups
that Arachne may be (or contain) some kind
of Troyan virus. I think it may be time to
publish some open answer to these rumours.
Basicaly, these rumours were based on two observations:
First of all, Arachne will delete your C:\DOS directory,
if your TEMP variable points to C:\DOS. Let me say, that
your DOS system files are not temporary files in any way,
and therefor pointing TEMP to C:\DOS (TEMP=C:\DOS in AUTOEXEC.BAT)
is one of the most stupid things I have ever
seen. Unfortunately, Microsoft choosed this to be default
setting for DOS version 5.0 (and maybe also 6.0). I had no
idea that they have done it this way, because I was never
using default configuration of any MS-DOS, and later I
upgraded to Caldera DR-DOS, to get rid of illegaly owned software.
Second problem, is that some people like to view things which they shouldn't view - and in Arachne license, README.TXT, they were asked to do. In this process, they
may read some messages they were explicitly asked NOT TO READ, by agreening with my software license. What they viewed, was not Troyan virus of any kind, but simply passphrase used to decrypt Arachne registration keys (which
are DOS-only so far).
How I am going to fix these problems? I think I have to
improve Arachne setup wizard, and test if TEMP is pointing
to really temporary directory. I think users will have to turn on this setting manualy once again, like in previous
versions of Arachne - but people with fine-tuned DOS installations won't get best possible results with default settings.
I probably won't comment any misunderstandings which were
caused by reverse-engineering of CORE.EXE. If I wanted other people to view my code, I would publish Arachne as open source - but I won't do so, unless I am sure, that companies interested in commercial usage of Arachne are ready to hire
my as external consultant to continue work on such code. So far, there are no signs that Arachne customers are ready to
do so, so I have to continue with closed source development,
to make some development possible at all.
