Organization called Web Standards
is trying to force web surfersto use
only four allowed browser types,
and prevent them from using anything
else, like Lynx, Konqueror - or Arachne !
They want to persuade webmasters to block users of other browsers and even users of older versions of major browsers !
I guess I don't have to explain, what's wrong about
especially compared let's say to
It is absolutely anticompetitive and generaly unfair.
Well, maybe it would be acceptable to recommend users
to upgrade to latest versions of browsers - but on
some platforms, newer versions are not available or not
yet available. Even my Arachne for Linux is available only
in version 1.66, while DOS version reached number 1.70 ...
Upgrade campaign launched by Web Standards is
explicitely specifing four allowed browser types
(two versions of MSIE, Netscape and Opera), and calls
for sending users of older browsers to page asking
them to upgrade !!!
Someone should tell them, that this is really not the way
to go. Web should be open to many types of web clients,
including programs used by blind surfers,
simplified web browsers in cell phones, palmtop PCs,
running on old PCs, etc.
